Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system triggered extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team saved 14 individuals stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. One resident also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people with another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing tropical storms stronger and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Scientists have found that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms result in an average of millions in dollars in damage to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration last week due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
