Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey said. "They were part of a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove militants who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
